Behind The Lens
I’ve been behind a camera since my school days, but photography really took shape for me after I left and began assisting an industrial photographer. From there, I worked across several commercial studios in New Zealand before eventually going out on my own when the studio I was with closed its doors.
Over the years, I’ve had the chance to work alongside, and learn from, some of the country’s leading advertising photographers. Each experience shaped the way I see and approach an image, though I wouldn’t point to any single influence. Inspiration tends to build over time.
My style sits somewhere in the realm of traditional pictorial photography, with a tendency to push past the “rules” when it feels right. These days, my focus is largely on landscapes, seascapes, etc, drawn in by light, shape, movement, and whatever detail happens to hold the eye.
A good photograph, to me, is one that lingers. Something you come back to without quite knowing why.
Sometimes I’ll plan a shoot, checking light, tides, or direction, but more often than not, I’ll just head out for a drive and see what’s there. The moment usually matters more than the plan.
I’m not trying to tell big stories or deliver heavy messages. Most of my work is simply visual, a reflection of what caught my attention at the time. If there’s anything I hope people take from it, it’s a sense of being there: the wind, the warmth, the atmosphere of the moment.
What makes my work different?
Me.
Outside of photography, I’ve logged around 2,500 skydives, play guitar (badly), enjoy a glass of good wine, and live somewhere fairly remote. When I grow up, I’d like to be an astronaut.
